Licences and credits

What free software licences mean for your work, the licence of this guide, and the people and projects behind Animux.

Your work is yours#

Programs like Blender, Krita or Kdenlive are licensed under the GPL or similar free licences. These licences cover the programs, not what you make with them. Your films, pictures, models and music belong to you, and you can sell them, keep them private, or share them under any licence you choose.

The licences only matter if you give the programs themselves to others (for example, copying Animux for friends, which is allowed): you must pass on the same freedoms.

Program licences#

Each program's licence is listed on its page and in Versions. The full texts are in /usr/share/doc/<package>/copyright on Animux. Most common:

Licence Programs (examples) In short
GPL-2.0 / GPL-3.0 Blender, Krita, GIMP, Inkscape, Kdenlive, Synfig, Ardour free to use, change and share; changes must stay free
AGPL-3.0 MakeHuman II, POV-Ray, Upscayl like the GPL, also for network use
Apache-2.0 Cycles, pbrt-v4, LuxCoreRender free, with a patent grant
BSD / MIT Gaffer, OpenEXR, OpenColorIO, Alembic, appleseed, Mitsuba, DJV free, few conditions
TOST-1.0 OpenUSD Apache-2.0 based (Pixar)

Assets: MakeHuman's base mesh and standard assets are CC0 (no conditions). Blender's splash-screen art belongs to its artist. The Animux wallpapers and logos belong to the Animux project.

Not included for licence reasons: DaVinci Resolve (free but not open; the menu links to its download), the NVIDIA proprietary driver (installable), Lucille (no licence was ever published).

The Animux Guide is © the Animux project and licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0): you may copy, translate and adapt it, also for teaching, if you credit Animux and share your version under the same licence. Screenshots show the programs named on each page.

Credits#

Animux stands on the work of thousands of volunteers: the Debian project, the Xfce team, the Blender Foundation and community, KDE (Krita, Kdenlive, K3b), the GIMP, Inkscape, Synfig, Pencil2D, MakeHuman, Ardour and Audacity teams, Image Engine (Gaffer, Cortex), Pixar (OpenUSD), the Academy Software Foundation (OpenEXR, OpenColorIO, OpenVDB, OSL, MaterialX, OpenImageIO), the authors of POV-Ray, LuxCoreRender, Mitsuba, appleseed and pbrt, and the original Animux project for animators.

Thank them by using their programs, reporting bugs, and donating where you can.
